Gaucher’s Disease

Gaucher’s disease is a rare, inherited enzyme deficiency that causes the buildup of fatty material inside certain cells, called Gaucher cells.  These affected cells then accumulate in areas such as the liver, spleen and bone marrow, and can lead to anemia, weakening of the bones, disability and other severe medical problems.  Gaucher’s disease is estimated to be present in 10,000 to 20,000 Americans, and is especially common among the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

Replenishing the missing enzymes through drug therapy has been proven to slow and even halt the progression of the disease.
