Growth Hormone
Deficiency
Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is a medical condition
that causes inadequate production of growth hormone and can affect both children and adults.
Growth disorders caused by a hormone imbalance are typically treated
with injections of growth hormone.
Approximately 20,000 children – or one in every 4,000 school aged children – have
growth hormone deficiency and approximately 35,000 adults are affected.
Annually, 4,000 children and 6,000 adults are diagnosed with GHD.
Other growth disorders, such as chronic renal insufficiency and Turner’s
Syndrome, affect another 5,000 children and can be treated with growth hormone therapy.

Special Considerations for Growth Hormone Deficiency
Patients
Patients need additional monitoring and support to
maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.
For example, each month, our pharmacy team may remind patients of the importance
of following
any diet plan created for
you by your doctor or nutrition counselor. You may also be asked if you have breathing
problems such as shortness
of breath, coughing, or new or increased snoring, sudden and
severe pain or tenderness in your upper stomach, with nausea, vomiting, sweating, fever, fast heartbeat, yellowing of the skin or eyes,
vision changes and sudden, severe pain behind your eyes.
